PHA Prepare Lecture Series - Fall 2021

Missed out on any of the incredible lecture series the PHA Prepare team put together?

Check them all out here:

October 6: MCAT Tips & Tricks

October 19: Application Timeline

Winter Break Ideas

With winter break upon us, the most common questions we are getting these days are what to do with winter break. Naturally, as high achievers, your focus is on how to use such time productively. If your focus isn't on getting ready to apply in the next 6 months (hope you're studying for that entrance test or working on your Composite Letter application if you're applying), here are some ideas from us, your friendly, neighborhood Pre-Health Advisors:

  1. Rest is productive. Get plenty of it! We are in for a long spring with continued evolution of the COVID pandemic. We don't often think of rest as productive, but it's very important to see it as a useful, productive activity to help sustain ourselves.

  2. Reflect on where you are, and where you want to go. Have you refined your WHY? What’s the connecting thread between your experiences? What do YOU bring to the table that’s different? This is not to be confused with competing or comparing to others – focus on you and how you are growing for yourself. We all make unique contributions in certain spaces, so focus on the qualities, traits, and skills that make you WHO you are.

  3. Check out the PHA Prepare Lecture Series for advice on any of the following: MCAT Tip & Tricks, the Application Timeline, getting involved in Leadership opportunities, Scribing, planning for the summer, or getting involved in Research at Emory.

  4. Learn from stories. Check out PHireside Chats, the PHA Podcast!

  5. Browse through the PHA Blog archive to learn about past opportunities to see how that can provide you ideas for new opportunities in the future. Search by topic to the right of this post.

  6. Learn a new skill or hobby – it doesn’t need to be medically / clinically / healthcare related.

  7. Begin to become aware of issues relevant to healthcare. Are you informed to discuss current events at an interview in the future? For example, what are some of the hot button issues? How do you learn best? Do you read articles, books, digest other media?

  8. Compile your science class notes and materials. Begin exploring how to create a MCAT / other entrance test study plan, if you haven’t already. Even if you are a few years away, at least begin to think about who you might talk about how they studied, or what else you need to know.

  9. Catch up with friends and mentors. We don't often think of reflection as something that can happen in a catch up conversation, but take advantage of such quality time to critically reflect on yourself and your life.

PHireside Chats: Episode 2

The second episode of the PHA run podcast, PHireside Chats, has just been released! PHireside Chats aims to highlight "little known" professions, unconventional paths, and underrepresented identities in pre-health. Through the sharing of stories, we hope to help students explore and learn about the endless options of career paths they can take.

The second episode features our guest Charles Lane, who is in his fourth year of medical school at Emory. Listen to the riveting discussion amongst Charles and PHA Peer Mentors Nicole Lulkin (22C), Alex Beesley (22C), Denver Roberts (22C) and Sabina Iqbal (23C)! They chat about his navy experience, project in the medical humanities on using compassion to connect allied health professionals with medical professionals, his path to Emory, and how his practice of Cognitively Based Compassion Training shapes his experience as a medical student. He also gives tips to students interested in medicine and those interested in beginning their own meditation journeys.

The podcast episode can be streamed on Spotify or YouTube (see below)! This is a great listen for any downtime during your winter break.

Below is Charles’ bio, for more about him:

Charles Lane served as a US Navy nuclear submarine officer for six years before starting medical school at Emory University in 2018. He is a yoga and meditation instructor, and in 2020 he completed a certification in Cognitively-Based Compassion Training (CBCT) – a contemplative practice rooted in Tibetan Lojong compassion meditation. He has elected to delay medical school graduation for a year to work on a project in medical humanities and quality improvement. This discovery project seeks to create a paradigm shift in the content, context, and culture of medical education to more deliberately train and support the enaction of compassion for self, inter-professional colleagues, and patients. Ultimately, he is still undecided on which field of medicine to complete his residency training in; though he is fascinated by the growing field of trauma-sensitive interventions seeking to reintegrate mind and body.

Pre-Med Webinar w/ Current Top-12 MD Students

Pre-meds need medical shadowing and other forms of clinical experience. However, opinions vary on how to obtain it, how many hours of it to aim for, and which types matter most. Additionally, when clinical experience is obtained abroad during breaks, students often question whether to shadow versus volunteer abroad.

Our webinar seeks to show one path towards achieving shadowing experiences: to pursue it in Europe during a school break, through organizations like Atlantis, which run observation-only, AAMC-compliant programs. This panel is made up of three current MD students at elite Top 12 universities, all of whom went through the MD application process after having spent a portion of their summer shadowing in a hospital in Europe.

The webinar will have two parts. First, it will start with a brief presentation by each presenter on (a) what their experience in Europe was like in comparison with US shadowing and clinical experience; and (b) how that experience was leveraged in applications and interviews. Second, there will be a Q&A where panelists can address questions about their shadowing experience, how shadowing (versus other extracurriculars) played a role in the application process, or any other MD application questions.

This webinar is relevant for any pre-health student in an MD path, but also to those considering the DO and PA paths as well, since much of the same dynamic is in place in those tracks. We hope you join us!
