Virtual Advising Event: DACA, DREAMer, International Student Pre-Med Advising

We write to share an educational opportunity on July 29 and July 30, 2021 from 2:00-5:00pm EST for advising DACA, DREAMer, and international students who wish to attend medical school in the United States. This program is aimed at current advisors, counselors, and educators who have a role in mentoring college students in the US who face additional barriers due to their immigration status. Through lectures, seminars, and Q&A sessions, the program will provide up-to-date information on what it means to apply to medical school and later residency as a DACA, DREAMer, or international student.

Participation includes attendance at our virtual educational program and completing one online survey at the end of the program. The event is free of charge.

If you are interested in participating, please sign up HERE to receive a Zoom invitation. Please feel free to share within your professional networks to advisors, counselors, and educators who may be interested.

This event is part of an educational study coordinated by UNC Chapel Hill medical students, Keny Murillo Brizuela, BS, and Yoshiko Iwai, MS, MFA, under the mentorship of Gary Beck Dallaghan, PhD, Director of Educational Scholarship at UNC School of Medicine. The program is sponsored by the Office of Scholastic Enrichment and Equity. For any questions about the program, please email Keny (keny_murillo-brizuela@med.unc.edu) and Yoshiko (yoshiko_iwai@med.unc.edu).

TeleShadowing

TeleShadowing is a free clinical e-shadowing platform open to all pre-health students from high school and beyond. As clinical shadowing opportunities have become limited in virtue of the ongoing pandemic, we are firm in our mission to extend shadowing opportunities to students across the globe. Our next TeleShadowing session will take place on 7/10/21.

The link to join is on our website: https://www.teleshadowing.com/join. As TeleShadowing grows, we will have the opportunity to provide accessible and inclusive virtual clinical experiences to students in the field of pre-health.

Clinical shadowing experiences are crucial to applications and the overarching decision to pursue a career in the medical field. TeleShadowing intends to encourage and inspire students to explore the multifaceted world of medicine through our two-hour weekly Zoom sessions, in which they will have the opportunity to interact with health professionals as they walk them through real-life case studies and their path to medicine. Through our program, students will also be offered immediate certification of their hours for applications after having taken a quiz on the content prepared.

TeleShadowing is determined to offer exceptional clinical shadowing experiences weekly that will leave lasting impressions on students with points to reflect upon during their journey to medicine.
