Loyola Urinary Education & Research Collaborative

Technological advances have had a profound effect on medicine. A patient’s genome and his/her microbial communities can be sequenced, gene expression can be quantified, protein production and interactions can be qualified, and the biochemical interactions throughout a system can be identified and quantified. This deluge of data has led to new discoveries and new fields, including the field of bioinformatics. This has paralleled the emergence of yet another field: health informatics, which employs data mining and machine learning approaches to extrapolate new correlations, causations, and connections within electronic medical records (EMR). This influx of data has transformed biomedical research, as well as patient care.

The Loyola Adventures in Urobiome Data (L.A.U.D.) summer research program will introduce students to ways in which data is revolutionizing research in urinary disease research. Over the course of 8-weeks, summer researchers will gain exposure to current research areas in benign urologic disease, conduct hypothesis-driven research, and develop the skills to synthesize, interpret, and present their scientific research! Summer researchers will work with research faculty, postdoctoral and clinical fellows, medical and graduate students currently engaged in urinary research at Loyola University Chicago.

Program Details:

  • Program will be 8 weeks – June 2 through July 28
  • Participants will engage primarily if not exclusively virtually*
  • The 2021 summer cohort will consist of 8 participants total
  • Participants will be paid a $3250 stipend
  • This is a full-time commitment. Participants will be engaged during normal business hours M-F.

* Due to the evolving COVID pandemic, the 2021 program will be held primarily if not exclusively virtually. If an individual selected for the program lives within the Chicago area and if Loyola labs are open, a possible in person experience will be discussed.

Key Dates:

  • Applications open: January 1, 2021
  • Applications due: March 1, 2021
  • Decisions announced: April 2, 2021
