Autumn.
Thanksgiving. Gratitude.
When
I’m out riding my bike in the crisp, cool air this time of year, it’s hard not
to look at the beautiful colors of autumn and appreciate the beauty of nature.
And this time of year, with Thanksgiving just around the corner, a spirit of
gratitude comes over me.
The author Ralph Waldo Emerson
once said: “Cultivate
the habit of being grateful for every good thing that comes to you, and to give
thanks continuously. And because all things have contributed to your
advancement, you should include all things in your gratitude.”
In
the world of academics, reflecting on this quote also makes me realize that
none of us can really do what we do alone. So to paraphrase Emerson a bit, I
would mention that many things and many people have contributed to my advancement.
Therefore, it’s important to include all of those things and all of those
people in my gratitude.
Take
the time to appreciate the autumn colors, to give thanks for the opportunities
you have, the things you have done. And don’t forget to thank all the people
that have helped you along the way. Cultivate the habit of continuously
giving thanks. And enjoy your Thanksgiving break!
