Tips on Staying Academically Engaged

If you read the PHA Pulse, you know that one of PHA's goals this Fall is to help you maintain the excitement and enthusiasm of the new semester all term long. In this week's issue, we talk about maintaining your passion for academics. After all, your education is the reason why you're here. That being said, it's easy to forget how fun learning can be when you're bogged down in the day-to-day grind of classes, homework, and exams. It can also be hard to find the joy in learning when you're struggling academically (perhaps for the first time ever). You may feel overwhelmed with how much there is to learn here at Emory, putting pressure on yourself to figure out "what you want to do with your life". You may be feeling all of these feelings, or none of these feelings, and we're here to tell you: you're not alone.

We're also here to tell you that Emory's liberal arts education is rife with opportunities to stay academically engaged and maintain your passion for learning through the tough times. Read below to learn about some of PHA's suggestions for staying academically engaged throughout the semester:

-Dining at the DCT: Sponsored by the Provost and Emory Dining, Dining at the DCT is an opportunity to invite a professor to a meal at the Emory Student Center. This is a great opportunity to connect with faculty outside of the classroom. There are few people out there more passionate about academics than faculty members so pick their brains about how they stay excited about their subjects. After scheduling a meal with a professor, students on a meal plan will just swipe their card as usual. Students who are not on a meal plan can participate as well. Just let the staff know you're participating in Dining at the DCT and they'll provide a meal card for you to sign.

-Meet with an Academic Coach: Waiting until you hit a rough patch before meeting with an Academic Coach is kind of like waiting until you get the flu to get your flu shot. Meet with an Academic Coach early on while there's still plenty of time in the semester to set your plan for success into motion. Academic Coaches can assist students with time management, study skills, and academic stress/test anxiety. The earlier you learn these strategies, the earlier you'll be able to use them! -Attend an Emory College Event: From the Study Abroad Fair, to lecture topics such as "Can White People Appreciate Rap?", to Therapy Dog Study Breaks, and special movie screenings, there are a plethora of ways to engage academically outside of your class schedule. Use these special events as a way to explore other departments, challenge yourself intellectually, meet others with similar interests, and embrace the liberal arts education.
