The Master of Arts in Medical Sciences (MAMS) program at Loyola University Chicago is a 9-month program that prepares highly qualified students for matriculation to medical school. In the past four years, their matriculation rate has been 96%. Nearly every student in a class of 55 is well positioned to enter into medical school and excel.
The program was founded in 2004 and is one of the original such programs of this nature within the United States. They prepare students who aspire to become compassionate, culturally competent physicians, and who want to build to build a compelling medical school application. They are known for the rigor and quality of their graduate coursework and the long term advising commitment to their students. Their student centered, noncompetitive, and collaborative environment allows each student to capitalize on their strengths as they build their medical school credentials. Guided by the Jesuit values of “seeking knowledge in the service of humanity; preparing to live in a shared, global community; and building on the desire to always do and become more,” they facilitate access to Chicago area hospitals and clinics with opportunities to work with underserved populations, sensitizing students to social justice issues, especially in regard to the availability of medical care.
Students who are a good fit for this program have a sound academic background but may have a GPA that suffered as a result of an unexpected emergency or weak time management skills during their freshman year. They especially encourage individuals from underrepresented groups to apply. A minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 and minimum MCAT score of 500 are required for application. All applications will receive a holistic review.
