Research Position: Division of Cancer Biology and Department of Radiation Oncology, Emory University School of Medicine and the Winship Cancer Institute

Full time research technician positions are available for motivated senior undergraduate students interested in obtaining full-time training and experience in basic/translational research in the laboratories of Dr. Aparna Kesarwala and/or Dr. Alexandre Orthwein in the Division of Cancer Biology, Department of Radiation Oncology, Emory University School of Medicine and the Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University.

The technician will be involved in projects studying different aspects of cancer biology, including metabolic rewiring and genome instability, and how this knowledge could be utilized to improve cancer therapy. Experimental approaches and techniques may include but are not limited to cell culture, immunofluorescence, Western blot analysis, DNA cloning, CRISPR/Cas9, siRNA knockdown, protein purification, and flow cytometry. The position will also involve general support work in the laboratory. Previous wet lab experience is preferred.

These positions would be ideal for candidates interested in gap year(s) research experience prior to application to medical or graduate school or MD/PhD programs. Drs. Kesarwala and Orthwein both have extensive mentoring experience and will provide direct guidance for the development of a personalized career development plan for the selected technician(s). DUCOM's Application First Aid (AFA) Program provides one-on-one mentorship for pre-med students through each step of the application: the primary app, secondary app, interviews and any general questions that arise! Our goal is to help students applying in the 2023-2024 cycle by being an extra set of eyes on their application as well as offering moral support! Applying is difficult in so many ways and the AFA team hope we can give back to current applicants by being a friendly face they can ask questions, advice, or just vent to if need be! The services are completely free and the club will begin matching students to over 100 volunteer DUCOM mentors (first year medical students) starting in mid-April. Program Overview 

The Health Professions Readiness Education Program (HealthPREP) at Emory is an 8-week summer program (May 30 - July 21, 2023) facilitated by Emory School of Medicine (SOM) in partnership with the Rollins School of Public Health (RSPH). HealthPREP is open to undergraduate and graduate scholars interested in pursuing a career within the health professions. We provide opportunities to increase competitiveness for admissions, professional development activities, and exposure to primary care settings, as well as research principles. The overall purpose of HealthPREP is to facilitate the entry of qualified students from educationally and economically disadvantaged backgrounds, into health-related graduate and professional schools. 

Job Summary 

HealthPREP is looking to hire five (5) individuals to serve as tutors for the HealthPREP scholars. We are requesting 3 tutors specific for MCAT material and 2 tutors specific for GRE material. The MCAT/GRE tutors’ primary responsibilities involve instructional engagement, including answering questions about material presented in the scholar’s Kaplan MCAT/GRE Prep Course throughout the summer program. HealthPREP MCAT/GRE tutors are expected to be in good academic standing and foster a supportive learning environment. HealthPREP tutors will receive a stipend award to cover approximately 8 hours per week beginning in mid-April through the end of July 2023.

Conference Opportunity: Harvard Medical School- Empower- A Symposium on Underrepresented Voices in Medicine

Empower: A Symposium on Underrepresented Voices in Medicine is geared towards pre-medical students applying to medical school in the upcoming 2023-2024 cycle who are historically underrepresented in medicine (e.g. Black, Hispanic/Latinx, American Indian, Alaskan and Hawaiian Natives), LGBTQ+, and/or first-generation low-income. Ophthalmology/Oculoplastics Internship in Santa Monica, CA (Dr. Cynthia Boxrud)

This internship is for college graduates who are participating in a gap year and intending on matriculation to medical school for the fall of 2024. Interested applicants must have already completed the MCAT in order to be considered for the internship. As an intern for Dr. Cynthia Boxrud, interns will learn about ophthalmology and oculoplastic surgery. Responsibilities include taking patient histories via electronic health records systems, presenting patients to Dr. Boxrud, and assisting throughout the day in the clinic. As part of a surgical practice, interns will be able to observe cosmetic and ophthalmic surgeries once a week. Interns will learn sterile technique and gain insights into the inner workings of an operating room such as collaborations between surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and scrub technicians. Additionally, this internship provides students opportunities to participate in research projects affiliated with institutions like the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine or to initiate their own projects. In addition to clinical experiences, interns will be responsible for administrative duties that impact patient care within a private medical practice, such as completing insurance authorizations, ordering office/medical supplies, and preparing the operating room. Supported by the mentorship of Dr. Boxrud and the engaging experiences provided by the internship, past interns have matriculated to medical schools including Columbia, Johns Hopkins, UCSF, NYU, Mayo Clinic, UCLA, USC, and Northwestern.

This internship is located in Dr. Boxrud’s private office and private operating room in Santa Monica. The start date for the position is expected to begin the first week of June 2023; upon beginning the internship, incoming interns will participate in an introductory training period hosted by the outgoing class designed to orient them to their new position. The internship will end in July 2024.

The pay for this position is $17 per hour. Interns are expected to work approximately 40 hours per week with variability depending on patient and surgical load. Vacation time is largely reserved for medical school interviews.

Because of the high expectations and more involved responsibilities placed upon interns in a smaller private practice, interested applicants must demonstrate diligence, responsibility, leadership, ability to collaborate with others, and experience in healthcare or other interpersonal settings.
