Hearts for Health

Hearts for Health is a startup that aims to provide a platform for access to resources and insight for the pre-medical community, ultimately to foster a collaborative environment.

This includes our virtual shadowing program which we’ve established for our audience to hear from speakers across various healthcare specialties that speak on their journey and advice. This is especially relevant as COVID-19 has limited the exposure to shadowing that would normally be available. Shadowing sessions are completely free, and no sign-up is required! Our virtual shadowing sessions are held on Thursdays at 7 PM CST. Additionally, participants can receive credit for attending by passing a quiz after sessions. Quizzes are available until 11:59 PM CST on the Wednesday following each session. This can be documented on CVs/resumes and is a great opportunity to also learn about specialties in medicine and more!

We have an upcoming session on Thursday, February 3rd at 7 PM CST that will be live streamed on our Youtube page. The session's flyer is attached. We are always welcoming more students to join us for shadowing sessions and would greatly appreciate if you passed this along to your pre-medical/health students. To stay up to date, feel free to pass on our website, Instagram page (@hearts_4_health), and Youtube page to students, which are all linked under my signature below. Our Instagram page includes posts on upcoming sessions, and our Youtube page will include videos from previous shadowing sessions along with live streams. Students can also subscribe to our mailing list at the bottom of our website's homepage.

Emory Helps Guatemala 2022 Clinical Trip

Emory Helps Guatemala medical service team is a part of the Clinical Branch in the organization Health and Development in Guatemala at the Emory College of Arts and Sciences. The organization is currently recruiting student volunteers for an upcoming service trip.

In March 2020, we collaborated with Katherine Fuller, a clinical pharmacist at Emory, and Daniela Farchi, the team leader, in leading a 10-day medical service and community development team to Guatemala, through the parent organization Helps International. Our team provided medical care and health education to 698 patients and installed 40 stoves/water filters in the community development division.

We are working on establishing a medical team for our next service trip with tentative dates June 3-13, 2022. We want to invite student majors to volunteer to provide public health resources to communities around Santa Lucía Utatlán, Sololá next summer either by carrying out the educational workshops alongside clinicians or building concrete stoves and installing water filters.

Interested individuals should fill out the Google Form (click the image) and/or may contact Kiara Vazquez Navarez at kiara.ailani.vazquez.narvaez@emory.edu

Health and Safety Protocols Updated for Testing Year 2022

Protecting examinee health and safety is a priority for the AAMC. Working with AAMC medical and infectious disease experts and our testing partner, Pearson VUE, we have updated the health and safety protocols in test centers for the 2022 testing year. Pearson VUE test centers will follow local health and safety guidance and masks will continue to be required in all U.S. and U.S. territory test centers. You can find more details about the protocols in place at your specific test center on Pearson VUE’s website. We will continue to closely monitor the conditions of the pandemic and local health and safety guidance throughout the year, and the AAMC may make adjustments as necessary to maintain a safe testing environment. We encourage you to reach out to us with any questions at mcatsafety@aamc.org.

Tips for Feb. 8 Registration

#1 Save time

Fill out the first five tabs of information in the MCAT Registration System before opening day. It will save you about 5-10 minutes on opening day and will take you straight to scheduling when you log in. If you use autofill, please be sure to double check that your name matches the first and last names on your government ID.

Learn more in this brief video about the registration system.

#2 Apply for AAMC Fee Assistance Program benefits early

The 2022 AAMC Fee Assistance Program application will open on Jan. 31.  If you want to use your benefits for registration, learn more now about what you need to apply and submit your materials early.  AAMC Fee Assistance Program benefits are not retroactive.

#3 Understand how the waiting room works

More examinees schedule an exam on opening days of MCAT registration than on any other day, especially in the first few hours.

When the system first opens, you can expect a longer line with wait times of an hour or more.

The good news is we have a waiting room that will show you your place in line and include an estimated wait time until it’s your turn to register. We can also hold your place in line so you don’t need to wait by your computer or mobile device. Learn more about the waiting room and how it works.

  • There is no advantage to logging into the registration system more than 10 minutes before noon on registration day. At 11:50 a.m. ET, the system will randomly assign anyone already logged in with a place in line to register. If you log in after 11:50 a.m. ET, you will be behind the randomly assigned group.
  • Don’t open multiple browsers or refresh your waiting room page. This will not give you an advantage and may result in a longer wait time for you.
  • Don’t share your waiting room Queue-it ID with others. It can bump you or them out of the system, put you in the back of the waiting line, and can cause scheduling delays.
