Clinical Fellowships - Marcus Autism Center

The Marcus Autism Center, in conjunction with the Emory University School of Medicine and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, is offering six fellowships: the Cohen Fellowship in Developmental Social Neuroscience, the Simons Fellowship in Computational Neuroscience, the Marcus Fellowship in Speech Science and Engineering, the Education Sciences Fellowship, the Clinical Research Fellowship, and the Implementation Science Fellowship. Students who will receive a bachelor’s degree by June 2021 will be eligible for the positions. The fellowships will commence in July 2021, and they are 2 years in duration. Students can find further details on our website

The Cohen Fellowship in Developmental Social Neuroscience will involve cutting-edge social neuroscience research in infants, toddlers and adolescents. Fellows will work to further the understanding of autism through eye-tracking research, guiding a project from the point of data collection to publication of results.

The Simons Fellowship in Computational Neuroscience will involve integrating computational strategies with clinical research goals. Fellows will develop methods for the analysis of visual scanning and eye-tracking data, computational models of visual salience, and data visualization techniques, all with the aim of advancing the understanding of autism and efforts at early diagnosis.

The Marcus Fellowship in Speech Science and Engineering will involve researching early vocal development, including speech production and speech perception, as part of a program to map out both typical and atypical development of spoken communication in early childhood.

The Education Sciences Fellowship will involve research in educational innovations in autism, from early child care through high school. Fellows will learn about classroom-based interventions to increase social emotional engagement and inclusion, gaining experiences with observational research methods, cutting-edge intervention research, and implementation science approaches.

The Clinical Research Fellowship will involve in-depth clinical and research experience through work with infants, toddlers, and school-aged children spanning the full autism spectrum. Fellows will learn assessment measures across a variety of domains commonly used for clinical and diagnostic characterization of autism and related disorders.

The Implementation Science Fellowship will involve training in research focused on translating evidence-based treatments for autism into community settings, as well as the processes and partnerships that support these efforts.

Emory Helps Guatemala 2022 Clinical Trip

Emory Helps Guatemala medical service team is a part of the Clinical Branch in the organization Health and Development in Guatemala at the Emory College of Arts and Sciences. The organization is currently recruiting student volunteers for an upcoming service trip.

In March 2020, we collaborated with Katherine Fuller, a clinical pharmacist at Emory, and Daniela Farchi, the team leader, in leading a 10-day medical service and community development team to Guatemala, through the parent organization Helps International. Our team provided medical care and health education to 698 patients and installed 40 stoves/water filters in the community development division.

We are working on establishing a medical team for our next service trip with tentative dates June 3-13, 2022. We want to invite student majors to volunteer to provide public health resources to communities around Santa Lucía Utatlán, Sololá next summer either by carrying out the educational workshops alongside clinicians or building concrete stoves and installing water filters.

Interested individuals should fill out the Google Form (click the image) and/or may contact Kiara Vazquez Navarez at kiara.ailani.vazquez.narvaez@emory.edu

The Doctor Is In: Thanksgiving Reflections

Have you noticed the autumn colors over the past couple of weeks?  This year autumn has not disappointed when it comes to the color palette on display.  Walking through campus and seeing more people, driving around town, and certainly spending time out on my bike have all been opportunities to reflect on where I’ve been, where I’m going, but most importantly where I am.

As the Thanksgiving holiday nears, don’t forget to reflect a bit on those elements of time.  Relative to the past, going home for Thanksgiving always means reconnecting with childhood friends, high school classmates and of course, family.  Thinking about what comes after that long weekend is hard to avoid…papers, exams, interviews, waiting to hear about X, Y or Z options.  But be sure to pay special attention to ‘now’.  Live in the moment, and for the moment.  As I got out and about in my neighborhood this brisk Monday morning on my bike, I noticed a maple tree that was full of bright red leaves just last week, now standing tall, yet leafless.  It was a reminder to appreciate these fleeting moments as they are happening.  And as you’ve probably noticed, the only constant is change.

While reflecting on that tree this morning, I was reminded of gratitude.  Grateful that I could see it when it was bright red, and knowing that in just a few more months, it will spring forth with that yellow-green hint of another season, and the ever-cycling nature will continue.

Have a break filled with reflection and gratitude, and enjoy those fleeting moments.

-Dr. Batisky, PHA Executive Director
