Detroit Mercy Dental Summer Enrichment Program

Summer Enrichment Program (SEP)

The University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry Summer Enrichment Program (SEP) aims to assist students from underrepresented and disadvantaged backgrounds with gaining admission to dental school, and encourages participants to become practicing dentists in medically underserved areas. Because the dental admission test (DAT) and lengthy application process can be considered an obstacle in applying to dental school, SEP was developed to make the participants more competitive and qualified applicants. SEP is a facilitated entry program that provides educational and professional development experiences to assist the participants with matriculating into and graduating from dental school, and to provide them with resources and support for succeeding in their future careers in Dentistry.

SEP is a  9-week (4 weeks self-pace and 5 week in-person) structured program that offers free housing and DAT Preparation, and a stipend to cover sustenance and travel expenses. Various educational and professional development experiences will be afforded to participants, including financial aid information, admissions counseling, dental school application assistance, academic success and professional development sessions, and cultural competency training. The participants will also be exposed to clinical experiences and other aspects of dental education including simulation lab activities, dental specialty panels, and primary care exposure. In order to foster a welcoming environment, provide mentoring opportunities, and expose them to the city of Detroit, SEP will also coordinate several social events for participants including trips to museums and sporting events, tours of the surrounding area, and networking luncheons and dinners with UDMSD students, staff, faculty, and alumni, along with local dentists in the community.

The Application deadline is February 15, 2022. Acceptance decisions will be emailed to applications by the end of March 2022. For questions about the SEP program or the application process, please email to dental_diversity@udmercy.edu.

PHA Advising (RE-POST): English Pre-Reqs

Originally posted on November 20, 2020:

 English Pre-Requisites

Medical schools and other professional healthcare programs often require 2 semesters of English. At Emory, a lot of students try NOT to take another English class after completion of their first-year writing (through AP or otherwise) and instead try to use Continued Writing (CWRT) classes (required for Emory graduation) to bypass this.

When using CWRT, the following “categories” do NOT typically count as both CWRT and Eng pre-reqs: foreign languages, labs, science classes, methods classes, and honors thesis credits.

CWRTs at Emory that Don’t Count as an alternative for ENG Pre-Req:

·       Any Foreign Language prefix: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Tibetan, Yiddish

·       Any Science Lab. Examples include, but are not limited to:

o   Bio/ENVS247LW

o   ENVS442W

o   Bio370LW

o   Chem371LW

o   Phys444W

·       Technical or Methodological Writing Classes. Examples include, but are not limited to:

o   Soc355W or 457W

o   Psyc200W

o   QTM302W

·       Any Honors Thesis Credit: 495BW (or any other course number used by the various departments)

The list above is not an exhaustive list – you should consult with your PHA advisor if you have questions or if you think a class might meet a category here but isn’t explicitly listed. You as the applicant are responsible for verifying accepted courses with admissions offices at medical schools and other healthcare professional programs.

The safest option for any student to maximize their options in applying to medical school / healthcare programs is to take an additional English prefix-based course, such as one that starts with Eng, CPLT, or ENGCW.

PHA Prepare Presents: Application Timeline Workshop

Personal Care

Hi Everyone! My name is Trey Quinn, and I am a 4th year Computer Science student simultaneously pursuing my Bachelors and Masters degrees from Georgia Tech. I also just happen to have Cerebral Palsy, a physical disability that impacts my speech, fine motor, and mobility. I employ a staff of rotating caregiving assistants to help me with everyday tasks. I am currently looking for some one to work for me on Friday nights (6 PM till 12 AM) as well as Saturdays (flexible/splittable hours between staff members).

My current staff members often describe this job as getting paid to hang out with a good friend. Minimum job requirements would include feeding me, prepping meals, assisting with personal hygiene (brushing teeth, bathing, tolieting, etc), light housework around my on-campus apartment (vacuuming/sweeping as needed, taking out the trash as needed, occasionally doing laundry, etc), helping people understand my speech in social situations (parties, hanging out with friends, job interviews, etc) and running occasional errands. Bonus points if you have a car that can transport my fold-up walker, have enough knowledge of college-level STEM materials to occasionally write out my verbal solutions to my homework assignments, and/or have a sense of humor that is as dark and twisted as mine. Pay is $15 an hour tax-free. I don’t negotiate pay, so don’t try. This job is especially ideal for college students or young alumni interested in pursuing careers related to healthcare, biomedical engineering, special education, or disability law/advocacy.

Contact me at rquinn33@gatech.edu if interested in interviewing.

University of Chicago - Pre-Doctoral Positions.

We are excited to announce the beginning of this fall’s pre-doc hiring cycle at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, and to provide information on how these pre-doctoral positions can help your students.  Pre-docs (sometimes called Research Professionals or full-time RAs) are two-year appointments working directly for faculty on their research in the quantitative social sciences (QSS).  Students who are interested in graduate study in QSS fields but do not yet feel ready for a PhD program, or who are uncertain whether they want to pursue a PhD, find these positions to be especially useful.  Students with rigorous quantitative backgrounds outside of the social sciences (e.g., physics, engineering) have used the pre-doctoral path to transition into QSS programs.  Through their work for faculty, pre-docs expand their research toolkit, learn more about the research process, and pick up important credentialing through faculty letters of reference.  These are competitively paid positions with full benefits.

If you know of students at any stage in their undergraduate career who might be interested in a research career, please encourage them to visit our website to learn more.  Students can sign up to hear about new job opportunities when they are ready to apply (e.g., a freshman could sign up to hear about new postings in three years).  The PREDOC Consortium also provides a wealth of programming and information sessions, as well as guides to the pre-doc application process.  PREDOC’s offerings are growing rapidly, so students should check back frequently.

Staff at Booth and PREDOC are more than happy to answer any questions you have about pre-doctoral opportunities.  Please reach out to ResearchProfessional@lists.chicagobooth.edu or info@predoc.org with any questions or to arrange a meeting
