The Doctor Is In: Volume IX

Fiat Lux - 12.21

As I write this morning, I reflect on the significance of the day.  In the northern hemisphere December 21 is the winter solstice. Since prehistory, the winter solstice has been seen as a significant time of year. In many cultures, it has been marked by festivals and rituals to symbolize death and rebirth of the sun. Most noticeable about the winter solstice is the reversal of the gradual lengthening of nights and shortening of days.  So as we head into the longest night of the year, I would encourage you to look around and remember the light.  It’s hard not to notice that people often decorate their homes, yards and businesses during this season.  The lights brighten the nights and early mornings, and they do bring a sense of hopefulness to the season.

I have also heard that Jupiter and Saturn will be the closest that they have been together in about 800 years, which is quite remarkable.   It has truly been an interesting year, a challenging year, a remarkable year.  We have seen the evolution of a pandemic related to a newly recognized virus and an illness we did not know a year ago.  We have seen that this pandemic has brought to light the need to address disparities in health as well as injustices that exist within our society and its many institutions.   While vaccines to protect against SARS CoV-2 are being distributed, we struggle to find not only the treatments for, but also the vaccines against, social injustice.  And let us not forget the seemingly endless election year.  Hope is on the horizon, yet there is still another election here in Georgia that will bridge into the new year.

So, in ten days as we transition from 2020 to 2021, try to remember the lights.  Look around, embrace the darkness tonight, the longest night.  Reflect on the day and the year.  And plan to be a part of the light. Remember that the days will start to get longer tomorrow.

The motto of my undergraduate alma mater, Hiram College, is ‘Fiat Lux’…Let there be light.  As I reflect on the day, and the eventual longest night, not only will I remember that motto, but I would adjust it a bit to state:  Let me be a light.  A light of caring, a light of justice, a light of hopefulness.

Rutgers Multidiscplinary PhD Program

Based on their interests, students entering the multidisciplinary program will choose one of four educational tracks that focus on molecular biosciences (MBGC), integrative biosciences (CBNP), infectious disease and immunity (I3), or biomedical engineering (BME). Each track provides a structured education in one of four broad biomedical subject areas and yet encourages students to develop their own curriculum on their specialized research interest. Faculty mentors may be members of more than one educational track, thereby allowing students greater flexibility in choosing the track that fits their educational needs. In addition, students may apply for consideration by more than one track, and it is possible to move between tracks once enrolled.

The Multidisciplinary PhD Program will be holding a Recruitment/Interview Day on February 11 and 12, 2021. In order to be considered for this invitation only Recruitment/Interview Day, applications should be received by January 06, 2021.

Looking for Winter Break Ideas?

With winter break rapidly approaching, the most common questions we are getting these days are what to do with all this extra time off. If you're a current student at Emory, the winter break presents 6 weeks of time between semesters. That's a lot of time! Naturally, as high achievers, your focus is on how to use such time productively. If you're focus isn't on getting ready to apply in the next 6 months (hope you're studying for that entrance test or working on your Composite Letter application if you're applying), here are some ideas from us, your friendly, neighborhood, Pre-Health Advisors.:

  1. Rest is productive. Get plenty of it! We are in for a long spring. We don't often think of rest as productive, but it's very important to see it as a useful, productive activity to help sustain ourselves.

  2. Reflect on where you are, and where you want to go. Have you refined your WHY? What’s the connecting thread between your experiences? What do YOU bring to the table that’s different? This is not to be confused about competing or comparing to others – focus on you and how you are growing for yourself. We all make unique contributions in certain spaces, so focus on the qualities, traits, and skills that make you WHO you are.

  3. Take a look at the PHA blog to look at some of the service opportunities that are virtual. There's also been a lot posted about grad programs and summer programs.

  4. Learn a new skill or hobby – it doesn’t need to be medically / clinically / healthcare related.

  5. Begin to become aware of issues relevant to healthcare. Are you informed to discuss current events at an interview in the future? For example, what are some of the hot button issues as we transition from one presidential administration to another? How do you learn best? Do you read articles, books, digest other media?

  6. Compile your science class notes and materials. Begin exploring how to create a MCAT / other entrance test study plan, if you haven’t already. Even if you are a few years away, at least begin to think about who you might talk about how they studied, or what else you need to know.

  7. Catch up with friends and mentors. We don't often think of reflection as something that can happen in a catch up conversation, but take advantage of such quality time to critically reflect on yourself and your life.

  8. Consider setting up future plans. What could be done in summer, when there’s maybe hope for a vaccine to be widely distributed and potential for resumption of some sort of normality? Are there physicians, hospitals, urgent cares, clinics, assisted living facilities you can be in touch with to provide volunteering and help?

Loyola Urinary Education & Research Collaborative

Technological advances have had a profound effect on medicine. A patient’s genome and his/her microbial communities can be sequenced, gene expression can be quantified, protein production and interactions can be qualified, and the biochemical interactions throughout a system can be identified and quantified. This deluge of data has led to new discoveries and new fields, including the field of bioinformatics. This has paralleled the emergence of yet another field: health informatics, which employs data mining and machine learning approaches to extrapolate new correlations, causations, and connections within electronic medical records (EMR). This influx of data has transformed biomedical research, as well as patient care.

The Loyola Adventures in Urobiome Data (L.A.U.D.) summer research program will introduce students to ways in which data is revolutionizing research in urinary disease research. Over the course of 8-weeks, summer researchers will gain exposure to current research areas in benign urologic disease, conduct hypothesis-driven research, and develop the skills to synthesize, interpret, and present their scientific research! Summer researchers will work with research faculty, postdoctoral and clinical fellows, medical and graduate students currently engaged in urinary research at Loyola University Chicago.

Program Details:

  • Program will be 8 weeks – June 2 through July 28
  • Participants will engage primarily if not exclusively virtually*
  • The 2021 summer cohort will consist of 8 participants total
  • Participants will be paid a $3250 stipend
  • This is a full-time commitment. Participants will be engaged during normal business hours M-F.

* Due to the evolving COVID pandemic, the 2021 program will be held primarily if not exclusively virtually. If an individual selected for the program lives within the Chicago area and if Loyola labs are open, a possible in person experience will be discussed.

Key Dates:

  • Applications open: January 1, 2021
  • Applications due: March 1, 2021
  • Decisions announced: April 2, 2021

Magoosh - MCAT Test Prep

Magoosh is a company on a mission to bring low-cost and effective test prep to students who need it the most. Magoosh is proud to report that 61% of Magoosh MCAT students identify as underrepresented, and 39% are the first in their families to attend college.

This year, we’ve been alarmed by how the coronavirus pandemic has further disadvantaged underrepresented and lower socioeconomic status students in their medical school aspirations.

So earlier this summer, we launched a pilot program to provide a free 12 months of MCAT Prep to students who qualify for AAMC’s fee assistance program (FAP), and we were overwhelmed by the positive response.

Our comprehensive MCAT prep is already priced far lower than other companies, and you can see what it includes here.
