MedServe Gap Year Position

MedServe is a service program for upcoming and recent graduates interested in pursing a career in medicine. MedServe is currently recruiting its fourth cohort of Fellows, and they are seeking high potential students interested in making an impact in healthcare.

MedServe has worked with North Carolina physician leaders to develop a program that places future physicians in clinics with “rock star” primary care physicians across rural and underserved communities in the state. As Fellows, students will work in both a clinical role (e.g. a medical assistant) and community role (e.g. quality improvement projects). It is a two-year program, modeled after Teach for America ("Teach for America for medicine").

Emory SOM Clinical Research Coordinator Positions

The Emory School of Medicine has two full-time job openings in the SOM Department of Psychiatry lab. Their clinic sees pediatric and young adult patients who are suffering from mental health problems or substance use disorders. They are seeking qualified applicants to fill these research coordinator positions. These positions have a strong educational component along with clinical exposure. This is a great opportunity for those who are seeking admission into graduate schools or medical schools.

Project Horseshoe Farm Gap Year Fellowship

Project Horseshoe Farm (HSF) is a non-profit organization based in Greensboro, Alabama that offers service and support programs to improve the health and quality of life of adults and children in the community. HSF also offers unique education and leadership development opportunities for current undergraduates and recent college graduates.

To continue to strengthen the focus on nutrition within Project Horseshoe Farm's service and leadership development programs, they are very happy to announce the launch of a new 13-month Farming, Health, and Nutrition Fellowship track for the 2019-20 academic year (learn more at https://www.projecthsf.org/farming-health-and-nutrition-leaders).

Fellows in this track will spend approximately half of their time working with a local organic farm (http://www.bdafarm.com/) and the other half of their time working to strengthen the nutritional focus in Horseshoe Farm’s community health programs.

Georgia Tech AMSA Pre-Health Conference

Georgia Tech AMSA is proud to introduce their 13th Annual Pre-Health Conference, which will take place from 8:00am to 5:00 pm on Saturday, March 9th, 2019. The Conference will be held in the Klaus Advanced Computing Building at 266 Ferst Dr NW, Atlanta, GA 30332. The theme for this year's conference is "Service through Medicine." Breakfast and lunch are provided for everyone in attendance. The dress code is business formal.

Detroit Mercy Dental Summer Enrichment Program

The Summer Enrichment Program (SEP) at Detroit Mercy Dental aims to assist students from underrepresented and disadvantaged backgrounds with gaining admission to dental school, and succeeding in their future careers in dentistry.

Over the span of four weeks, various educational and professional development  experiences will be provided to SEP participants, including intensive DAT courses,  dental school application assistance, simulation lab activities, dental specialty panels, primary care exposure, along with academic success, professional development, and cultural competency seminars. SEP will also coordinate several social activities for participants within the city of Detroit, and networking events with Detroit Mercy Dental students, staff, faculty, and alumni, along with local dentists in the community.

With acceptance into the program, SEP provides cost-free housing and complimentary DAT preparation. A stipend to cover food and travel expenses is also included.

CSTEP Internship Program at SUNY Optometry

The Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) project at SUNY College of Optometry offers two summer programs for undergraduate students. Applicants for the programs described below must be New York State Residents and identify with a historically underrepresented group or an economically disadvantaged background.

1.) Internship: June 4 - June 14, 2019. This is an exploratory program, designed to let students shadow in the clinics, visit private practices, go through professional school readiness workshops, network with students and faculty, and do a research presentation to name a few.
2.) Summer Academic Program: Every Tuesday, June 4 - July 30, 2019. In this academic program, students will get a chance to take introductory optometry curriculum courses with renowned faculty, for 2 elective credits, possibly transferable to the students' college institution. Students also get a chance to shadow one day in the clinic.

Gap Year Opportunity with Casa de Esperanza

Casa de Esperanza, a non-profit in Houston, Texas, provides residential care to children, birth through six, who are in crisis due to abuse, neglect, or the effects of HIV.  Care is provided in their neighborhood by Hands of Hope interns.  This internship is a great opportunity for students who wish to complete a service internship (or gap year) before entering medical or graduate school.

This gives interns the opportunity to earn hands on experience learning how abuse, neglect, and the effects of HIV play a role in some of society’s most vulnerable children. Interns will be working directly with therapists, specialists, and social workers to meet the specific needs for each individual child. Interns in the program gain valuable experience that is relevant to a number of fields and future career goals while simultaneously making a meaningful difference in the lives of a vulnerable group of children.

Clinial Research Coordinator Position at Massachusetts General Hospital

Massachusetts General Hospital is currently recruiting for multiple clinical research coordinator positions for their Cancer Outcomes Research Program, with start dates in early summer 2019. These positions are ideal for graduating students who hope to pursue a career in psychology, medicine, public health, or an allied health profession. Their multidisciplinary team of clinical researchers are conducting over 25 supportive care studies on a variety of interventions to improve coping, wellbeing, and quality of life in patients with cancer and their families. The research assistants who work with them receive excellent training in the procedures for coordinating and implementing clinical trials, interfacing with the Internal Review Board, collecting and managing participant-reported data, as well as presenting and publishing study findings. In addition, research assistants receive ongoing mentorship from MGH faculty in preparing and applying for graduate or medical school as they progress to the next phase of their careers.

Remote Area Medical (RAM) Interest Meeting

Would you like to volunteer at a free mobile medical clinic in rural areas across the U.S? Are you interested in helping plan and implement a clinic in Georgia? Remote Area Medical (RAM) is a nonprofit organization with the mission of offering care and alleviating suffering for those in need. The goal is to provide free dental, vision, and medical services to underserved and uninsured individuals. RAM is startng starting an Emory Chapter and is looking for motivated students who want to address health care issues and help further the cause! 

They will be hosting an information session on Thursday February 28th from 6-7 p.m. in Cox Computing Center Classroom A. They have executive board positions open and this meeting will be geared to discussing your ability to get involved in RAM leadership! Volunteer at Muscular Dystrophy Association Summer Camp

What is MDA Summer Camp?
Kids with muscular dystrophy, spinal muscular atrophy and related life-threatening diseases face daily challenges that often make “just being a kid” difficult. As their muscles progressively get weaker, children may lose basic functions such as walking, dressing, eating, talking or even breathing.

MDA Summer Camp gives kids ages 8-17 the freedom to be kids with others who are just like them during a life-changing week of fun and friendship — all at no cost to their families. Summer Camp offers a world of possibilities and awesome adventures to campers — from swimming and horseback riding to zip-lining, adaptive sports and camp dances.

Why volunteer?
MDA relies on the support and dedication of volunteer counselors are by campers’ sides day and night so that they can do all the fun activities that summer camp offers. Volunteering at MDA Summer Camp will enrich your life and inspire you in ways you never dreamed possible. You will help kids discover new interests, build self-confidence and experience the independence of being away from home in a safe environment where barriers don’t exist.
